8.5 x 11 Paper Sizes

8.8.5 x 11'' copy paper 5 x 11 is the most common paper size in the United States. When you are asked for a printed document, this is what you will be given and it's the size most printers are set up to use by default. You will also find this size available at most office supply stores and stationery stores. 8.5 x 11 is not only the most popular print paper size in the USA but also in most English-speaking countries. However, it's not the only paper size you will see as there are other sizes like A5, A4, A3 and more that all have different uses.

The USA, unlike many other countries, does not follow the ISO 216 standard paper size system with A3 and A4 being the most commonly used sizes in other parts of the world.8.5 x 11'' copy paper Instead, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) created their own regular series of paper sizes based around the Letter format with A becoming the A size and B, C, D and E being the larger formats that are often referred to as Ledger or Tabloid.

These paper sizes are often confused with each other because they look similar and they all have the same dimensions but there are differences between the formats that make them unique from each other.8.5 x 11'' copy paper For example, A5 is the international equivalent of US Letter and has very little in common with A4 which is much taller.

While A5 is a good choice for smaller documents like flyers, postcards and save the dates it's not as useful in a notebook or for a poster.8.5 x 11'' copy paper The A3 paper size is much taller than A4 and has a more narrow layout making it more suitable for posters, charts and architectural drawings.

The ANSI A paper size is the same as the traditional A4 format but is still a little shorter than A3. A3 can be folded into either a tri-fold or a half-fold brochure which makes it very versatile.

This is why you will often find a booklet format that's A3 on one side and A4 on the other. This way you can flip the booklet in any direction to change the layout of the information on the pages.

8.5 x 11 is also the most common print paper size for laptop and tablet covers and the inside pages of notebooks. In fact, some notebooks have perforated sheets so that they can be torn out easily as needed.

One of the biggest advantages of this format is that it is very easy to read, even if you're reading it off a screen. It's taller than A4 but a lot narrower so that it fits comfortably on most tablets and phones and in all standard envelopes. It's also a great fit for most photo prints as well. For these reasons and others, 8.5 x 11 is the most common print paper size in the United States. You will also notice that most copy machines are designed to print on this size as well so that it's quick and convenient for you to print anything from a simple letter or legal document to an entire book.
