Choosing a 2b Pencil

A 2b pencil is a medium dark pencil, ideal for sketching and shading.2b pencil It is harder and darker than an HB pencil but lighter than a 6B pencil, and is often preferred for its ability to create richer dark tones with less pressure. It also erases fairly well, so you can get away with not having to completely carve lines into the paper, as you might find with a harder pencil like 4H.

Choosing the right pencil depends on your specific needs and drawing style.2b pencil For some people, a softer and darker pencil is more versatile than a standard #2 HB, while for others, a broader range of possibilities is required. Depending on the surface of the paper, hardness may also play a factor. Papers with heavier textures tend to show more of the texture when drawn on, while smoother papers reveal less when penciled over.

The graphite grading system can be confusing to those unfamiliar with it.2b pencil In the US, we use numbers indicating the hardness of the lead, with higher numbers indicating a harder pencil. The system goes up to 9H, but most drawing and art pencils don’t need anything that hard. The system isn’t so simple in many other countries, with different grades used for different purposes. For example, in Japan, you’ll find grades that aren’t available in the US – such as 5B and 3H – which are considered a good fit for technical drawings, light sketches, and outlines.

Regardless of the system you’re using, the most important factor is the feel of the pencil in your hand.2b pencil Choosing one that’s comfortable, easy to control, and that feels right in your pocket is key to success with any kind of pencil work.

As you browse pencils, it’s important to keep in mind that all pencils will smudge and smear if enough pressure is put on them.2b pencil Some pencils will smudge less than others, though, so it’s a case of trial and error to see what works best for you.

The Castell 9000 2B is an excellent pencil overall.2b pencil It has great point retention and the core is very accurate to its grade, unlike some of my other 2Bs (most notably the Tombow 8900, which runs a little soft for its grade). It leaves a nice dark line that’s perfect for general sketching and shading.
